IL-2 Sturmovik games spans three generations. This list is limited to those fixed-wing aircraft that have been built, and does not include projects, might-have-beens, and napkinwaffe. The use of the term attack is primarily an American term as other countries have described identical aircraft variously as light bombers, army cooperation aircraft, close support aircraft and as reconnaissance aircraft though the last term is often used for aircraft not used for such roles. IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 combines all the previous releases of Oleg Maddoxs IL-2 Sturmovik series simulating WWII aerial combat, along with new add-ons: IL-2 Sturmovik IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles - Ace Expansion Pack Pacific Fighters IL-2 Sturmovik: Pe-2 Peshka (v4.05 - previously download-only) Sturmoviks over Manchuria (v4.06 - also for download) 46. Categories overlap depending on how the specific aircraft is used, along with that of fighters, fighter-bombers, and sometimes even trainers which have often been used for the role, particularly when they were obsolete in their original role. IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 is a compilation of all the previously released IL-2 content, as well as an addition alternate history content named '1946.' IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 features over 200 flyable aircraft and over 300 aircraft that can be flown by the AI. Modern attack aircraft may be expected to function in high threat environments where enemy air defences preclude the use of strategic bombers.
