![]() Unlike most kart racers, there are very few alternate routes or shortcuts to be found, and sharp or abrupt corners are rarer still. Much like Mario Kart, longer drifts yield better boosts, which will undoubtedly be an important part of gaining an edge on the competition, and although it doesn't feel as twitchy as Nintendo's franchise, it completely works with nature of the tracks on offer. It adopts a very fast and frantic play style, with courses filled with considerably relaxed corners and subtle yet powerful drift mechanic. It's prevalent that OutRun's arcade influence certainly shines through in All-Star Racing. Much like the Traveller's Tales developed Sonic R, Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing is being handled by a western team - British developer Sumo Digital - who handled the masterful home conversions of OutRun 2 and released the 'greatest hits' version OutRun Online Arcade on Xbox Live last year. While previous Sonic off-shoots were very mixed in quality, a strong reassurance is the pedigree behind the project. It's an interesting project since it makes thorough use of Sega's rich history, and not just the Sonic lore, and that it will be landing on all consoles - not just the Wii - providing HD consoles with a kart racer at long last. While previous attempts experimented without vehicles and placed characters in unconventional courses, this is very much a Mario Kart-style racer, with power-ups, speed boosts and character-specific abilities galore. What is new, however, is the nature of his latest racing effort. From the Japanese-only Sonic Drift on Game Gear to Saturn fan favourite Sonic R and the recent Sonic Rider series, the speedster is far from a newcomer to the genre. ![]() The very idea of a Sonic-themed kart racer seems to reek of desperation on Sega's part, jumping on the ultra-successful Mario Kart bandwagon, but the truth is that Sonic and company have been doing this sort of thing for over 15 years. ![]()
